How HBCU Values Shape Success
A Journey of Growth, Opportunity, and Change
The path from a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to a property tax consultant is not the most common trajectory, but for me, it was the perfect blend of passion, education, and opportunity. Reflecting on my journey, I realize that each step of the way, from the foundation built at my HBCUs to the challenges and triumphs I’ve encountered as a property tax consultant, has shaped me into the professional I am today. I’ve learned that with the right mindset and perseverance, it's possible to pivot into a completely different industry and thrive.
The HBCU Foundation
My journey began at Huston-Tillotson College now Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, TX and concluded at Voorhees College now Voorhees University in Denmark, SC. At both HBCUs, I learned not just academics, but about community, resilience, and the importance of a strong cultural foundation. There, I honed essential skills, critical thinking, collaboration, leadership, that transcended the classroom. The support system I received from professors and fellow students was unparalleled. The experience of being in a space where I was not only understood but celebrated gave me the confidence to push boundaries.
The education I received at my HBCU was rigorous and multifaceted. I majored in Accounting, which helped me develop a solid understanding of business, economics, and policy; all of which, I would later realize, were foundational for my transition into the world of property tax consulting.
Being a part of a NAIA Division 1 nationally ranked basketball team, along with other organizations including the first and greatest fraternity of the Divine Nine, Alpha Phi Alpha Incorporated, I gained exposure to diverse perspectives, the emphasis on community-building, and the celebration of Black excellence which shaped the values I carry with me today.
A Shift in Focus: Discovering Property Tax Consulting
While my time at Huston -Tillotson University and Voorhees University was transformative, I knew I wanted to explore various career paths once I graduated. My interests in business, law, and problem-solving led me to discover the field of property tax consulting. Initially, I didn’t fully understand what the role entailed, but thanks to my manager at one of the largest regional CPA firms in Texas, I realized that property tax consulting offered a perfect intersection of real estate, law, and finance; fields that I had always been curious about.
Property tax consulting involves advising clients on property tax assessments, challenging overvalued assessments, and identifying ways to save money on property taxes. It was a field that required critical thinking, negotiation skills, and an in-depth understanding of local laws and regulations.
What drew me in was the opportunity to make an impact on clients' financial health. Many businesses and property owners find themselves overburdened by excessive property taxes and being in a position to help them reduce these costs felt rewarding. I was intrigued by how strategic planning could directly improve the financial outcomes for individuals and companies alike.
The Transition: From HBCU Graduate to Property Tax Consultant
The transition from an HBCU graduate to a property tax consultant was a combination of hard work, continuous learning, and a lot of patience. Initially, the industry was unfamiliar to me. The technical language and specific regulations were daunting, but I refused to be intimidated. I spent hours researching property tax laws, understanding how assessments were made, and learning the ins and outs of different jurisdictions. I also sought guidance from experienced consultants who had a deep understanding of the field.
I realized that many of the skills I learned at my HBCUs translated seamlessly into property tax consulting. My ability to analyze data, communicate effectively, and think critically were essential to my success.
My journey from multiple HBCUs to becoming a property tax consultant has been filled with growth, challenges, and achievements. Each experience, academic, personal, and professional, has contributed to shaping the consultant I am today. I’m grateful for the foundation I built at my HBCUs and for the opportunities I’ve had to expand my knowledge and skills in the property tax consulting field.
For anyone considering a career transition or unsure about the direction to take after college, my advice is simple: trust the process, stay persistent, and embrace the opportunities that come your way. With hard work and dedication, it’s possible to pivot yourself into something completely new and succeed.
