Kindness for the Win

Thoughts
Consulting
BPP

Have you noticed…kindness is contagious…or is it just me?!

In the high-pressure world of tax consulting, data, workflows and Property Tax code often take center stage. However, I’ve recently discovered there is a powerful, underappreciated factor that can dramatically affect outcomes: kindness.

While it was always a given that developing a strong technical expertise would be critical to leading a team and reducing my client’s tax liability; I’ve come to learn that the human connections I’ve built with clients, coworkers and assessors are playing an equally significant role in my professional success.

Kindness is more than just being pleasant, it’s a powerful tool that creates an environment of trust and cooperation rather than confrontation. A consultant who approaches an assessor with genuine courtesy and respect is more likely to foster a productive working relationship and set the stage for an open dialogue. The dynamic can lead to more collaborative conversations where both parties feel valued and heard. In my experience, appraisers are more likely to consider my points carefully, willing to provide detailed insights, are receptive to reconsidering a property’s valuation and discuss complex negotiations together. This allows us to work towards a more accurate appraisal and ensure a favorable valuation that leads to exponential tax savings for my clients.

By setting a positive tone and empathetic demeanor, it encourages others to respond in a similar way and helps develop deeper connections. This creates a ripple effect, extending beyond the immediate appraisal process. Local assessors, county officials and clients themselves can be influenced by this spirit of cooperation, making the entire process smoother, more enjoyable and a fulfilling work experience. It’s a win-win for everyone involved!

In short, approaching tax negotiations with kindness can go a long way. It not only can lift other’s spirits but can also significantly elevate your own mood, promote a sense of fulfillment, motivation, and can lead to fair and favorable outcomes for my client’s bottom line.
