This was the case with our firm’s journey with this bootmaker, a storied company renowned for its handcrafted boots, which faced a unique tax challenge involving a Freeport exemption that no firm had been able to secure for them before.

The story begins with a tax executive that our founder, Stefan, was after to secure business with before starting Modern. His company at the time started sending email communication to said prospect who had not consented to this and was very upset by it admitting he'd never like to hear from them again. Stefan reached out to him directly with a handwritten note apologizing for the overstep, well received by this executive but still not interested in doing business together. Although the business did not materialize at that time, the gesture left a lasting impression on him. Both Stefan and him eventually left their respective roles, with Stefan embarking on a new venture, Modern Tax. With the groundwork for future collaboration laid from that previous snafu, partnering with Modern was an obvious choice.  

Once on board, our firm immediately tackled the several challenges. Drawing on our deep expertise and innovative strategies, we secured the exemption that had eluded previous advisors. This success not only validated their decision in working with us, but also set a new standard for our firm’s capabilities. For this bootmaker, the financial benefits were substantial. We significantly reduced their tax burden, allowing them to reinvest the savings into their business operations and growth.

Stefan’s outreach, although not immediately fruitful, exemplified the kind of personal touch that ultimately won their trust. Secondly, it underscored the value of persistence and strategic thinking.
