My Journey to Becoming a Junior Property Tax Consultant

Consulting

I’ve heard that you kind of just fall into property tax. That’s exactly what happened to me. Hi, I’m Cailey, I fell into property tax, and here’s how it went.

It all started during college. Like every“great” story I met a boy online and started spending summers with his family in Texas. I took on odd jobs at his family’s property tax company to earn some money. In 2020, COVID rocked the world and my master’s program transitioned to online classes. I was in Texas for spring break and just never left. I spent three summers total working for my now in-laws learning what property tax was and the ins and outs of the daily processes.

After graduating, I became a high school math and physics teacher for a year. It seemed like the logical path. My degreewas in mathematics, and I was a tutor throughout college. Turns out, teaching is for superheroes, and I fall into the non-superhuman category of people.

I learned a lot about patience and adaptability—skills that definitely come in handy. Connecting with students from different backgrounds also gave me insights that I carry into my work today, but it was obvious that this was not meant to be my career.

After that year in education, I jumped back into the property tax field, joining Modern Tax Group, LLC, as an admin. This role helped me get a solid understanding of the operations behind the scenes and let me work closely with some fantastic senior consultants and admin.(Sandra is the best.)

During that year and a half, I absorbed everything I could, from the nitty-gritty of property tax regulations to how to handle client interactions. It was a great way to reconnect with my roots in property tax while preparing for what was next.

Then came the moment I’d been waiting for:the chance to step up as a junior property tax consultant! I was thrilled to take this leap and put everything I learned into practice. Now, I get to help clients navigate the complexities of property tax assessments, conduct research, and advocate for them during disputes.

It’s really rewarding work, and I love that I can make a difference for people and businesses alike.

Looking back, my journey to becoming a junior property tax consultant hasn’t been a straight line, but every twist and turn has equipped me with valuable skills and insights. As I continue to grow in my role at Modern Tax Group, I’m excited about what the future holds.

If you’re thinking about a career in property tax consulting, embrace your own unique path! Every experience, whether it’s a summer job or an unexpected detour, adds to your growth.

Here’s to new beginnings and the adventures ahead!
